Analfabetismo sanitario. Health iliteracy
The paradox of knowledge societies is that although we have access to all imaginable information it is increasingly difficult to have sufficient discernment. In this way when we open the hood of a vehicle we will depend on a mechanic for any question and the same thing will happen if the washing machine, the television or any apparatus begins to give problems.
In matters of health it will be the same. Faced with the slightest question, the normal thing has become to make an appointment with the health service on duty so that the experts can tell us what to do. The underlying problem is our limitation in understanding mathematics and that we forget that homo sapiens comes to life with organic systems and behavioural skills that allow him to survive in any medium.
If we were better in mathematics we would know that just as it is dangerous to give medicines to those who do not need them, it is also dangerous to give diagnostic tests to a healthy person, to go to hospital emergencies for a minor matter or to make an unjustified overuse of health services. 1. Performing a diagnostic test on a healthy person has the problem that it can be altered in an erroneous way (false positive) which will get us into a mess by making the doctor think that there is a problem that there is not.
