Many of us have been wondering for a long time if we will ever see someone who will adequately lead the health sistema. And the tricky thing is to get to know what the hell means in a proper way. For some, it's keeping costs down and maintaining the freedom to choose a private service for whomever they want. For others, it is that the service should be forever universal and free. The consensus is similar a Gordian knot.
Therefore, there will be no leaders to suit everyone. Nor will we be able to reach an agreement if we define them as defenders of the common good.
I expect nothing from the management structures. I have been on the NHS boat for many years now and I have heard only good words and seen very few gestures. Nor do I expect anything from professional organisations, which are dense, dusty and unfriendly to change and innovation. I hope that if there is a value proposition, it will come from the health professionals, as we have seen in this pandemic in which health managers and organisations have lagged behind the care providers by weeks.
The problem is that with the current level of overload, professionals are focused on a single priority: survival.
